(i) The anticonvulsant phenytoin (Dilantin, Schering-Plough) 0.1–1 mg ml−1 (n=4) and 3–6 (n=11) daily for twelve days produced a dose-dependent response in 20/35 (72%) patients with a maximal seizure frequency >4 once daily doses and did not appear to cause significant changes in seizure status parameters (totality index and seizure type) in 12/35 patients. The drug treatment response curves for anticonvulsants produced by the individual compounds varied according to seizure type. The anticonvulsants and antiepileptics monotherapies exhibited a dose–response relationship when compared within antiepileptic drug and seizure type groups: valproate had relatively severe dose-dependent and dose–response (1.5- to 4-fold) curves for maximum seizure frequency (high type) and reduction, whereas carbamazepine showed a curve for seizures of all seizure types (high type) and for seizure reduction only (2.5- to 5-fold) which was more mild compared with the valproate curve, and phenytoin exhibited the same dose-dependent and dose–response (5- to 10-fold) curves for maximum seizure frequency (high type) and reduction. The phenobarbital, carbamazepine, phenytoin, valproate and lamotrigine anticonvulsant treatment response curves were similar in all groups except seizure reduction (Table 3). How do you think pharmacopoeia will evolve in the future? What features and characteristics would you like to see?
I'd like the pharmacopoeia to have highest quality evidence provide a better guideline for pharmacists and the public to use. Ideally, as part of our pharmacovigilance program and other regulatory activities, we'll work with the FDA, which will improve evidence base and the quality of data available for consumers and healthcare professionals. That will help all of us to use our professional and ethical judgement on which drugs to prescribe for people, and in what order.
If you were to choose one drug promote for the public in future, which would it be and why?
The best thing about public is the fact they're often curious and eager to learn about drugs, as evidenced by everything from the number of inquiries into prescription drugs, to online resources like PharmacyChecker.com, public awareness programs that encourage the general public to be more informed about their own medication choices and the risks that can come along with it. I'd want to encourage pharmacists help people understand the safety and benefits of certain drugs, help them make safer, better informed decisions about their medication options.

I'd love to see some other safe, effective options that are available outside of medications in order to address pain. It's easy imagine that a new generation of therapies might offer new ways to help manage pain and reduce its symptoms. What advice would you have for pharmacists who work in public health? How can they take their work more seriously and contribute to reducing drug overdose deaths and abuse?
We need to make public health a priority, as evidenced the success of Affordable Care Act.
